‘Take a look at the portrait on the cover of this publication, or the larger version on the title page of Hugh Adams’ essay. This is a photograph of Hannah Cullwick, a nineteenth-century servant-cum-artist. For me, there is an uncanny resemblance to a contemporary artist, Cindy Sherman; an artist whose work draws on film and media culture and its influence in shaping perceptions of ourselves and the power of iconography I defining the role of women in patriarchal cultures. Of course, the likeliness is purely coincidental, but it offers a succinct and fitting modern analogy in which to consider Hannah Cullwick, who, as Alison Marchant suggests in her mixed media work, Relicta, may have been Britain’s first working-class-woman-artist.’ Preface text by Christopher Coppock, previous Director at Ffotogallery.
